We've been coming to Dauphin Island for years, and have eaten here almost every trip. The food has been adequate and the service tolerable. Our most recent visit, however, has changed our minds entirely about eating here again. I have to be honest, it was not our first choice for dinner the other night, but it was one of the only places open. We were wanting to get take out but had no menu. So we drove over there and I went in to ask for a menu. I stood for 5 minutes waiting for someone to help me. 3 different waitresses walked by as well as the owner, and none of them even said hello. Finally, I was given a menu and informed the hostess I would be back in very shortly with an order. After we compiled an order, I went back in, waited another 5 minutes for the hostess who told me to go back to the bar. I went back there and was rudely informed that they were NOT doing take out orders. She did offer to double check, but was 5 minutes doing so. She came back and told me that the hostess was wrong about take out orders and to come back the next night if I wanted take out. As I left, not one person apologized or even said good night. When I had waited earlier, I notcied that multiple tables were complaining to their waitresses about not getting salads, etc. One man even had to come up to the front to get silverware for his table, and the staff seemed irritated to have to go get him some. A waitress was being very unprofessional and yelling at the computer cause it was not working and hollering at the staff not to touch it.....all within earshot of the customers. We found another place.....Sunset Grill....that happily took our order, even though they were closing in 15 minutes. The food at Barnacle Bill's is no where near good enough to justify such a rude staff!

One of those nights where so many things were bad, you have to laugh about it. Weird: why do they wrap the utensils in plastic, serve the beer in plastic cups, and use napkins the consistency of toilet paper that come out of a giant popup container? Local color? I think not. Service staff wear t-shirts proclaiming that the food is great, but the service is bad. They are only half right. The salad, that arrived an hour after we placed our order, was a nice effort, but featured wilted lettuce and you are given a packet of Kraft salad dressing to go with it. The people at the next table felt so bad for us the gave us their bread. Main courses arrived and the grilled flounder arrived deep fried. Waiter took them away and came back 5 minutes later. They had scraped off the batter somewhat and tried to pass it off as grilled. When questioned about it the waiter swore on a stack that it wasn't. Crab cakes were covered in a mystery blend of who knows what that was inedible. There may have been crab cakes on the plate somewhere, but the search and rescue team is still looking. Prices are on par with other local restaurants where they care more about the food, service and don't make you feel like you are eating in a college cafeteria.

Located close to work, I've been here a handful of times for lunch. I've only had the cheeseburger (with sauteed onions & mushrooms and bacon) and feel that this is one of the better burgers in the Mobile area.

We came here on the way back from new orleans and stopped at the beach here. The beach was very beautiful but this restaurant was just plain garbage. The best thing about it is the name. My baby and I split sauteed crab claws and I had fried oysters. The biscuit was really not good... it was like hard and stale and gross all at the same time. IDK how you can mess up crab claws but they were like in some sort of congealed butter sauce and it was really disgusting. I was starving so I ate it but regretted it. The oysters were the best thing there but not good. Not very fresh but at least they were fried. If I had to come here again I would get fried shrimp or something but who knows, with this gross quality of food maybe they would have still been inedible. The waitress kept asking if everything was ok like at least 3 times during our meal. To her credit the service was fine but she kept asking if it was ok like she knew that the food was gross and expected us to be complaining about how disgusting it was. Also I feel like we spent over $60 for garbage food. Won't be back here ever.

Better than the Oar House. Better service and better food. Stay away from the top~shelf entrees and stick to sandwiches. I highly recommend the shrimp club. I've gotten that multiple times and have not been disappointed. Anything with steamed shrimp in it will be safe (except for the shrimp scampi..it has some of that boxed rice another reviewer mentioned).

My husband and I ate there this pass Sunday the food was good. We got Crawfish bread as an app, thank goodness we got that because they ran out of Bread and oysters in a half shell. He had Crab Cakes and I had Shrimp and Scallops had to wait on the rice). I got a Pina Colda and it came with no cherry or umbrella =O (that's half the fun). I got a T-shirt also and bill was $79.45 What a PRICEY lunch.

My family was on vacation in DI, and visited this restaurant. The place was very busy, and they took our name down. About 45 minutes went by and our name was never called, we went in to ask and they seated us at that time. Service was terrible, took 15 minutes for anyone to even come over to get our drink order, food was just ok. I had the scallops, which came with around 7 of them the low price of $17.95. Everyone else in my group said it was just ok, nothing really spectacular for the price you pay, not sure it is even fresh seafood, which is sad considering they are steps away from the Gulf.

This place is really just not very good. The sauteed crab claws (which for some inexplicable reason were $25) were literally swimming in butter. I like butter as much as anyone, but this was just kind of gross. The meat on the crab was sparce and overcooked. My "saffron" yellow rice tasted like it came out of a box. I ate one bite of it. My salad (the best part of the meal) was lettuce, one cherry tomato, half a hard boiled egg, some boxed croutons, and a packet of kraft ranch. My entree was the grouper with crawfish sauce. It had a decent spice to it, but the grouper was undercooked. The fried oysters I tried had just too much breading on them and the cocktail sauce was bland. The food is bad. But my god, $75 for 2 crappy entrees and an appetizer... Please! These kind of places are usually hit or miss... This was a big miss.

Had a fantastic dinner here tonight. Crab and crawfish cakes are awesome. The food in general is really good. It's not a "resort" restaurant. It's a very local place, so know that going it. Service was great as well. Kayla rocks!

This place was recommended to us by local family, and friends. And since we planned on begin on the island a couple more hours we decided to eat. The first thing to grind my gears was the waitress continued to talk with us even though it was clear we were saying grace. Second the sandwhich I ordered was okay, but didn't meet the expectations that the menu set for it. I got the messie jessie. Yes it was buffalo chicken, but I see no need to say this isn't for whimps? I have had ketchup hotter than this. The sandwhich was good at first, but quickly became like a trucker stop bathroom sandwhich. Also those aren't steak fries, and they were terrible. Third the waitress just wasn't personal or friendly. Also I would like my silverware served in a napkin not a plastic... I stopped begin in elementary school a long time ago. I honestly could never see myself coming here again, and I wouldn't recommend it to friends. I would rather pack my lunch than to eat here again. These people need to get off this island, and have some real food. Local favorite more like local dive.

Shrimp basket and fried oyster Po Boy was really good for lunch! Not the fanciest atmosphere but I don't need fancy just good food.

I ordered the grilled grouper, even though it was overpriced, and my wife had the po-boy sandwich. My grouper arrived really undercooked and almost watery. I sent it back and even though they cooked it for another 10 minutes it still had the watery texture and bland taste. I suspect it was frozen but the waitress said it was fresh yesterday. (does that mean they froze it overnight) I left about 3/4 of the fish. The loaded baked potato and canned green beans were fine as was my wife's po-boy sandwich. I never asked for a reduction in the bill and sadly the waitress never even offered one. This was the first restaurant we have tried here on our vacation and I'm really hoping they get better.

My husband, his parents, and I enjoyed a delicious meal at this waterfront place. My father in law said his fish was better than our local place fish and that is saying a lot! I liked my grilled shrimp poor boy and the shrimp were almost too big for my sandwich. Server was friendly and nice atmosphere. We enjoyed it! Family friendly.

Both wife and I ordered Grouper. She ordered it plain and grilled. It came with a nasty coating, and half of it was mushy, undercooked. Mine was grilled and blackened, and was a tad bit better, although a little mushy in areas. Was not cooked properly. They say they have the best food on the Island. I feel sorry for the Island if that is true. The upside is that if someone comes in and puts in a halfway decent seafood restaurant there, they should do a lot of business, and Bill's wil have to close.

Had a Trigger Fish po-boy for lunch with sweet potato fires. Very good. Service was good. Sandwich prices were in the $7 dollar range, but dinner entrees were in the $20 range.

I had grilled shrimp. It was very good. One of the better meals on the Island.

Best meal on the island is true but pricey so be prepared. We had a very friendly and attentive waitress and no wait to be seated. She warned us that the kitchen was backed up so did might take awhile. To me if you are honest with customers then you shouldn't complain. But really it didn't seem to take a long time. Serving sizes were slightly in the larger side but we didn't have any leftovers since we had hungry teens.

We had a party of 11 people with 5 kids. Went for lunch today around 1:30ish. The food was really great! Among us we had the shrimp Blt, seafood platter, oyster po boy, etc. our server was super sweet! the only complaint would be that it took what seemed like a very long time to get our food and the place wasn't very busy. It could be because we had such a large party. One person in our party got the wrong order but this was corrected fairly quickly. I would eat here again in spite of the long wait!

Went for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon in mid May. It wasn't busy and service was very good but then there was the food... Ordered crab claws and a cup of gumbo as an appetizer. At least half of the 'fresh' crab claws smelled and tasted spoiled. The gumbo tasted flat and was over seasoned with red pepper and filled with tiny likely frozen shrimp. For the main course we ordered blackened fresh gulf shrimp with coleslaw and steak fries and fried fresh snapper with rice pilaf and green beens. The blackened shrimp were under seasoned but the best thing we ate. The coleslaw and fries were whatever. The fried snapper was over cooked and the rice pilaf was mushy. Surprisingly, the canned green beens were great! Overall, you should pass on this place and hopefully read Yelp before you pass through Dauphin Island.

Pretty average Po' boy. Sweet potato fries are pretty good. Pretty drab looking inside. Shrimp cocktail was just jumbo shrimp on a bed of lettuce. Reasonably priced given that it is on the island.

Not the best looking place but everything I ate was great. Crab cakes were the best I ever had. Definitely worth trying.

We ordered a fish platter and a shrimp po boy. Just arrived to Dauphin Island - first time ever - and we were looking for something for takeout. The woman on the phone was extremely rude and not helpful whatsoever, and so were the staff inside the restaurant once we arrived to pick up the food. (Not to mention that a 5.00 gratuity was added to our bill unknowingly for TAKEOUT.) The food was mediocre - despite the grouper being "fresh", it was not cooked well. Shrimp po boy was alright, nor horrible. Same with hush puppies. Fries were soggy. The side salad was the best part. Do not go here if you want to get bad service and overpriced, bad food.

Save your money!!! Food is way overpriced for what you get and service truly does suck, which is what they promote on their t-shirts. Salad dressing is given out in hidden valley ranch packets which is terrible as you can imagine. Go several miles off the beach to Boudean's and get a high quality salad dressing with better service!! Seafood is even better at Boudean's.

Friendly, attentive service! Average but comfortable atmosphere. Our food tasted good and it came out fast.

Food looks and tastes like it came straight from the frozen food section of the grocery store. Definitely will NOT eat there again.

Overpriced blecch! The grilled shrimp on a bed of rice were OK if a bit overcooked, but a nice spice to them. The sauteed scallops were absolutely horrible! They came in a bubbling liquid and looked like some sort of alien space creature eyeballs with a rubbery jellyfish-like consistency. The two meals lightened my wallet by $50 for maybe the worst seafood we've ever had. Avoid this place like the plague.

You'd be better off going to Ben's (Ship & Shore) and getting a loaf of bread and a package of bologna. If you splurge on some mustard - you'll definitely beat Barnacle Bill's!!!

It's an island so ignore the atmosphere. The gumbo is fantastic. It is spicy but I like spicy. The angels on horseback were okay. The sauce was delicious but the oysters were so-so. My parents had the grouper lagniappe. Again it was spicy but good. I think it is very overpriced.

Service was a little slow but acceptable. Blackened red snapper was excellent and well seasoned. Gumbo appetizer would meet New Orleans standards. The whole party was quite pleased. The desserts, Key Lime pie, chocolate "moose" and blackberry cheese cake were excellent.

This is a qualified 5 stars. Dauphin Island is not the culinary capital of the South. It's a beach/fishing island. You don't come here for the food. That being said, I think the low reviews missed it on this restaurant. Friends who visited here and some who live here part of the year recommended Barnacle Bills. The decor is not fancy but the food is good. Everyone in our family of 6 enjoyed what they ordered. Blackened shrimp was very good as was the fried grouper, chicken alfredo and chicken fingers. The batter on the fried food was light and well flavored. It did not taste like they let the grease get old or too hot as often happens in many restaurants. Sweet potato fries and steak fries were also done well. Service was great; the staff was very friendly and attentive. Of course, service can vary greatly depending on who your server is but it seemed like the others were just as good as ours if not as outgoing. The lowest point of our meal was the dinner salad. It wasn't horrible but it was pretty obviously bag salad with some fresh cut vegetables. I've had worse but it isn't worth recommending. Islanders and people who visit here often cite "island time" when mentioning how things move at a slower pace. This isn't a joke. Relax and enjoy the chance to talk and even play games (we saw one family playing Heads Up on the iPhone with the restaurant staff occasionally joining in).

Did carry out one night while on Dauphin for vaca. Kind of pricey, but their staff is super friendly. The fish big ass salad was ok, but the seafood pasta was delicious!

This was the only place I ate at on the island but I would bet its probably the worst. The meals looked and tasted like they were pre-cooked frozen packages from the grocery store that got microwaved. Thats all the kitchen probably has, is a microwave and a large walk in freezer. Our server was nice and friendly, and hopefully she can get a job at a better place. 2 thumbs down for this place.

The last two times eating here I got food poisoning. I thought, once, maybe it was a fluke, but really, two times in a row. My husband didn't get sick though. Lucky him.
